This smoked salmon pasta without cream is really easy to make and takes almost no time at all. If you can multi-task, you could finish this meal in about 15-20 minutes. You can be sure to feel a little bit better about your healthy(ish) eating habits with this dish. Why? Because this uses two tablespoons of butter and zero cream.
I have a few tips down below, but you can also skip ahead straight to the recipe if you want to follow my recipe down to the letter.
How can this really have no cream?
Easy, for this recipe, I used almond milk, but you can use other alternatives as well, including but not limited to:
- Coconut milk
- Whole milk
- Oat milk
Feel free to experiment with what you’d prefer. We don’t really buy regular milk anymore, only for baking. With that being said, you can absolutely use heavy cream in place of any milk.
Tips on smoked salmon
Just so we’re clear, this is not the smoked salmon lox that you put on bagels. This is cooked, smoked salmon. If you cannot find or make it yourself in a smoker, you can use regular roasted and flaked salmon. You can also use pan seared salmon.
I was lucky that Justin’s auntie hosted a pot luck and prepared smoked salmon. She then let us take some of the leftovers. I love repurposing leftovers, so that’s why I used it; otherwise, I probably would’ve used regular salmon.
Final tips for smoked salmon pasta without cream
My final tips here aren’t all that out of this world, but they do offer alternate solutions to making this dish:
- You can use regular cooked and flaked salmon to make this
- You will still use butter and a form of milk in this recipe
- You are not limited to bowtie pasta. Use whatever kind of pasta you wish
- You do not have to include peas
Simple and delicious smoked salmon pasta without cream
Ingredients
- 4 cups bowtie pasta
- 1/4 cup reserved pasta water
- 3 tbsp butter
- 6 garlic cloves crushed
- 2 tbsp flour
- 1/3 cup almond milk or any milk you’d prefer
- 1/2 cup grated parmesan plus more for garnish
- 1/2 cup peas
- 1/3 cup shredded smoked salmon per person
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Parsley for garnish
Instructions
- Bring a pot of water to a boil. Season with salt. Once the water is boiling, add the pasta and cook to al dente according to package instructions. When done, drain the pasta and reserve about 1/4 cup of the pasta water.
- In a large pan on medium heat, add the butter. When the butter has melted, add the crushed garlic and stir for roughly a minute. Add the flour and stir until well incorporated. Slowly pour in the almond milk while stirring to incorporate.
- Stir until it starts bubbling. Add in the grated parmesan. It will start to thicken slightly as you stir.
- Add the peas and the smoked salmon and mix until well incorporated with the sauce. Season with salt and pepper, if needed.
- Mix in the pasta and mix well. Slowly drizzle in the pasta water, until the sauce reaches yours desired consistency.
- Serve and garnish with parsley.

Tasty and delicious. Thanks for sharing.
Didn’t have flour, but added in some cream cheese and extra Parmesan and it was so tasty. Thanks for the recipe.
That sounds like a fantastic tweak! I’ll have to try it out myself 🙂
